Tom Shorthouse

Tom is a native of Vancouver and enjoys a full performing schedule, playing music of many styles. He has been Principal Trumpet of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra since 1995. Tom also performs as much jazz as his schedule will allow and is a member of the Westcoast Jazz Orchestra directed by Fred Stride and the Alan Matheson Big Band. Other groups that he has frequently been asked to join in concert include the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, CBC Radio Orchestra, Vancouver New Music and The Turning Point Ensemble. 

Tom studied under Don E. Johnson at Humber College in Toronto (1979 - 1982) and went from there to work with Vincent Cichowicz at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois (1984 - 1986). After graduation Tom won a position as Principal Trumpet in the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan and he performed there for six seasons from 1986-1992. While in Taiwan , Tom also performed with the Yeh Shu-Han Brass Quintet and the Taipei Sinfonietta and was also very much in demand for recordings as well as popular nightclub work.

Tom holds positions teaching Trumpet Performance, Brass Chamber Music and Jazz Ensemble at Kwantlen University College in Langley BC, and Trumpet Performance at Vancouver Community College . In his spare time (!) Tom is an avid golfer.
